#70SportWays (31): Damir Karlovic, the history of HAŠK Mladost
Damir Karlovic became synonym for HAŠK Mladost. Having become its President in 1988, he managed to lead the society through turbulent times all the way until the end of 2016. Having had such a remarkable mandate brought him a highly visible status in the Zagreb and Croatian sport community.
Having trained handball, keeping up later on with tennis and getting involved in the development of university sports was happening on the sidelines of HAŠK Mladost. Especially succesful became the idea of academic rowing – where parts of the University of Zagreb stepped in and in a few years the competition for the champion of the University became serious. For many years he was part of the Croatian Academic Shooting Club Mladost, what brought him to become the President of the Zagreb Shooting Union and the President of the Executive Board of the Croatian Shooting Federation.
His vast experience of social management and his diplomatic skills were developed during his academic and research work in La Chaux-de-Fonds and Zurich in Switzerland. Professor Karlović always had arms open to international cooperation and the importance of looking up to higher standards. It is not without chance that in his professional career he managed to become Professor Emeritus – a unique and distinguishable accomplishment awarded only to the ones that have reached the highest level of academic efficiency.
The fact that HAŠK Mladost had to greet him farewell for the last time at the beginning of July 2017 made both the younger and the older members of the HAŠK Mladost community feel an emptiness which no one would be able to fill in. His work and commitment will remain in the heart of all truly HAŠK Mladost members. He always ended his famous lead of the HAŠK Mladost assembly with “Vivat, crescat, floreat!”. May this be the case with his inspiration and legend.
